#687: Ruling on Vaccines
QUESTION
“Sallam alaykum pls what is the ruling of vaccines in Islam,and the case where these vaccines there is alot controversy regarding or an evil motive behind it,what will the it status in Islam,haram or halal or makruh,jazakumullah khyran”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh
The general precept in Islām is that everything that helps prevent or cure a disease, as long as it is not Impure (Najāsah) and Harām for Consumption and does not cause any harm to the body is permitted and Halāl.
This is because the Dīn recognizes the Human research that is found in Medicine and Medical endeavours.
There were Medical Personnel in the lifetime of the Rasūl – salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam – and in the lifetime of the Sahābah after him.
These Persons were not rebuked for practicing all forms of Medicine, they were recognized.
And rather, a Condition was placed for practicing Medicine by the Rasūl – salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam – when he said, as was recorded by Abū Dāwud and An-Nasa’ī from ‘Amru bn Ash-Shu’ayb:
من تطبب ولم يعلم منه طب فهو ضامن
“Whosoever carries out a Medical Treatment (of whatever kind) and is not known to be an expert in Medicine, (and he by so doing causes a damage to his patient), then he must be held accountable.”
The condition is expertise and professionalism in Medicine.
Islām does not allow for making tests on people in any way.
That said, there is no proof to show that vaccination is not allowed in Islām.
Now, if there is controversy that an evil motive exists behind it, that needs to be sorted by Muslim Medical experts accordingly.
And efforts need to be made by Muslims to develop their version of the same vaccines.
The mere presence of a controversy regarding an evil motive does not render it Harām or Makrūh.
Rather it becomes Obligatory upon the Muslim experts in that field to make deeper research and come up with better alternatives for the Muslims, and Allāh knows best.
