#711: Refraining from disclosing a Date of Travel
QUESTION:
“Assalam alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh… Please is it truly unsunnatic/unislamic of someone to disclose a proposed date of travel…”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh.
There is nothing Sunnah about refraining from disclosing a day you have planned to embark on a journey to those arround you and those you love.
The Sharī’ah encourages carrying your love ones along in anything you do for this is among the things that strengthen relationships and make the bond between you stronger.
However whenever there is fear of harm or the risk of failure when it is disclosed, there is no wrong in concealing it. This is because the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – said as was recorded by At-Tabarānī and Al-Bayhaqī and considered Sahih by Al-Albānī:
استعينوا على إنجاح الحوائج بالكتمان، فإن كل ذي نعمة محسود
“Seek help, in the execution of your needs, with secrecy and concealment, for everyone possessed of bounties is envied.”
It was in this light that the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – used to conceal his Battle Campaigns and expeditions, the days he will set forth, the enemy he set out toward, and the details of the Battle, from people for the secrecy that is required in warfare and so as to forestall the possibility of the enemy getting air of his plans.
And Allāh knows best
Jazakumullāhu Khayran
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
