#752: The Authenticity of the Hadīth on Jumu`ah

752 QUESTION

“Sallam alaykum pls is this hadith authentic:

“It was narrated from Aws ibn Aws al-Thaqafi that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:

“Whoever does ghusl on Friday and causes (his wife) to do ghusl, and sets out early, and comes close to the imam and listens and keeps quiet, for every step he takes he will have the reward of fasting and praying qiyaam for one year.”

Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 496; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 410

ANSWER

Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.

Alhamdulillāh.

The Hadīth you refer to is recorded by Imām At-Tirmidhī from ‘Aws bn ‘Aws that the Rasūl – Salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam – said:

مَنْ اغْتَسَلَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَغَسَّلَ وَبَكَّرَ وَابْتَكَرَ وَدَنَا وَاسْتَمَعَ وَأَنْصَتَ كَانَ لَهُ بِكُلِّ خُطْوَةٍ يَخْطُوهَا أَجْرُ سَنَةٍ صِيَامُهَا وَقِيَامُهَا

Though the Ulamā have differed gently on the interpretation of some of the words in the Hadīth as was mentioned by An-Nawawī in his Shar’h on Sahīh Muslim and by Al-Hāfidh Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalānī in the Fat’h, the translation mentioned above is close.

The Hadith is considered Sahīh by the Imāms of Hadith as inferred by Imām Mubārak Fūrī in Mir’ātu Al-Mafātīh.

However, we must advise the reader and the questioner here: you should avoid approaching texts of Hadith that has just been translated without their scholarly rich commentaries. This is because English Language does not capture Classical Arabic translations. And no matter how good a Translator is in trying to capture the true meanings of the Classical Words in Arabic, he is not able to do so.

For instance, in the above Hadith, Imām An-Nawawi mentioned four different interpretations for the word غسل above since some of the Narrations came with غسّل with Tashdīd on the alphabet س. Likewise the word بكّر.

While some of them interpreted it to mean that He leaves at the first hour to the Masjid. Others interpreted it to mean “gave out Sadaqah” due to the Hadīth in which the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – said:

باكروا بالصدقة فإن البلاء لا يتخطاها

“Hasten to the doing of Sadaqah for misfortunes do not catch up with it.”

Likewise, some Ahādith interprete others and if your are not well rooted in Ilm and experienced with Ahādith, you may see a Hadīth and implement it solely without an understanding that it doesn’t stand alone for implementation.

May Allāh’s guidance be with us all, Amin.

Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazakumullāhu Khayran
