#769: I mistakenly step on a Chick: What do I do?

769 QUESTION

“Salam alaikim Ya admin. Please I have a question. I mistakenly stepped on a early infant chicken and it died. I was so terrified. Please, is there anything required of me regarding this as a muslim.”

ANSWER:

Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh

Alhamdulillāh.

There is no blame on you as long as what you said is true, that it was unintentional. Allāh Ta’ālā has said:

وَلَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ فِيمَا أَخْطَأْتُم بِهِ وَلَكِن مَّا تَعَمَّدَتْ قُلُوبُكُمْ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا

“And there is no blame on you in regards to that which you made mistakes. Rather (blame is on you) as regards that which your hearts intended. And Allāh is Forgiving Merciful”

And it is Authentically recorded by Imām Ahmad and Ibn Mājah that the Rasul – salallāhu Alayhi Wasallam – said:

إن الله تجاوز لي عن أمتي الخطأ والنسيان وما استكرهوا عليه

“Indeed Allāh has overlooked for my Ummah mistakes, forgetfulness and that which they were compelled to do.”

However, if the chick is a property belonging to a known Muslim, you have to seek his forgiveness and overlooking or you have to pay him in kind the value of which is equivalent to the cost of the chick.
