#779: Ruling on Breaking Fast with Food Items gifted from Christians
779 QUESTION:
“Assalaamu alaykum. pls,my Christian course mates, neighbours have been bombarding me with gifts,fruits,milk..my question is this can I break with those things?”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh!
May Allāh accept our fast and yours, and make us among those who are manumitted from the Fire of Hell in this Blessed Month, amīn.
Know, may Allāh be merciful upon us and you, that the Fuqahā have formed a consensus on the Permissibility of accepting gift items from the Kuffār except in situations where a harm is feared or something is at risk. Imām An-Nawawī mentioned in the Shar’h on Sahīh Muslim that this is a matter that the Ulamā have agreed upon.
That said, know that there is no difference between a gift that is given outside Ramadan and that which is give in it and for the purpose of breaking the fast with it. There is therefore no harm in you accepting those gifts and breaking your fast with them.
However, for the fact that the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – has said in the sound Hadīth that was recorded by Imām At-Tirmidhī and Ibn Mājah from Zayd bn Khālid Al-Juhanī that the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam – said:
مَن فطَّر صائماً كان له مثل أجره غير أنه لا ينقص من أجر الصائم شيء
“Whosoever feeds the fasting person what he uses to break his fast, he shall have the reward of the one who fasts without anything of the reward of the fasting person been reduced”
It is expected based on this that we give to our brothers and sisters in the Dīn the opportunity to have this magnificent reward by breaking our fasts with what they give us.
This said, the inference we draw from this is that while others is permissible, it is better that the first thing or meal we take for the Iftār should be food from other Muslims to us, and Allāh knows best.
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazakumullāhu Khayran.
