#799: Ruling on Gambling in Ramadān
799. QUESTION
“Sallam alaykum pls what is the status of the fasting of the person that Gamble during the month of Ramadan,Since Gambling is a major Sin does it nullify the fastings and pls does all Major sins anulls the fasting of a person, jazakhallahu Khyran”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh.
The Ulamā are agreed that fasting is not terminated except by those things that were a condition for it’s obligation, it’s acceptance or that are the essence of it.
As for those things which are it’s conditions then it is Islām, purity from menstruation and post Natal bleeding, and sanity. As for those that are the conditions of it’s essence then they are abstenance from eating, drinking and sexual penetration (the lowly appetites).
These are the things that invalidate it.
As for major sins such as gambling and the likes, they only reduce the reward of it and cast the shadow of persistence in sins upon the one who does them. Why will a person be observing the fast and still be persistent in sins. Let such people fear Allāh and remember a Day they shall return to Allāh and be held to account about all that which they used to do.
