#812: Ruling on Promise Made

812. QUESTION

MUST I PAY A PROMISE I MADE TO SOMEONE IF SITUATION PREVENTS ME FROM FULFILLING IT AT THE APPOINTED TIME?

“My question mall is when you promise to give some body some thing and due to condition you are not able to do so that that time is it must that you will still pay later and what if i die before will my peopl still pay what I promise to give the person”

ANSWER:

Alhamdulillāh

We answered in Question 681 on our Telegram Channel that the sound position with the Fuqahā is that there is no blame on someone who is not able to fulfill a promise he made if there are factors that led to the promises not been fulfilled. You may refer to it for further explanations.

In the situation you depicted, this is more pronounced and there is no blame on you. If you are able to compensate the person you promised then that is better. If you can’t, then Allāh has seen your condition and is with you.

Bārakallāhu Fīkum
