#827: Further Clarification on Hoarding of Goods
826. QUESTION
“Salaamu’alaykum warahmotuLlah, I want to ask a question. About stocking products till when their prices will be high. Hoarding is Haram. But I understand hoarding to mean keeping the goods from the people when it is needed so as to create scarcity in order to sell at a higher price. So I want to ask what if I buy some goods say in January and stock it because I know the prices will go up say in June because it will no longer be in season? Does it fall under hoarding too?”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Alhamdulillāh Rabbi Al-‘Ālamīn.
We responded in questions 253 and 352 on our Telegram Channel to matters relating to hoarding and we explained that the hoarding prohibited in the Sharī’ah is that which was done by way of influencing the market forces and creating a scarcity and a price increase. This is the explanation given by the majority of the Fuqahā in the Books of Fiq’h. It should be known that the Causative Factor ( ‘Illah) for it’s forbiddance is the harm and difficulty it inflicts on the Ummah.
What you have described does not appear to fall under this category and definition.
We ask Allāh for Guidance and Tawfīq amīn
