#833: Ruling on using a Ram with more than Two Horns (Polycerate) for Udhiyah
832. QUESTION:”Sallam alaykum warahmatullah Ya Shiek, please what is the ruling of Slaughtering a Ram with Four horns for Aidul-Adha”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh, Alhamdulillāh.
Animals with more than two horns are generally referred to as Polycerate animals (multi horned) and this can be found in Sheep, Cows and Goats. It’s been mentioned that there are particular breeds of these Animals that are known to be Polycerate.
The conditions for the animal to be used for Udhiyah are:
One, that it is of the Cattle animals (Bahīmatu Al-An’ām) sheep, cow, camel.
Two, that it is up to the required age mentioned by the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam.
Three, that it is free of defects such as blindness, broken leg, broken horn, illness, mental disorder, etc.
As for Rams that have more than two horns (Polycerate), as long as they are a specie of the animals that are to be used for Ud’hiya such as rams, we do not have any evidence in the Sharī’ah to imply that they are not to be used.
And Allāh knows best.
Bārakallāhu Fīkum.
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
