#837: Ruling on naming One`s Child Tanzīl or Tanzīlu ar-Rahman
836. QUESTION:
Assalamu alaikum Warahmatullah. Please I want to ask a personal question. Is is safe to name one’s child “TANZIL” or “TAZEELU-R-RAHMAN”?
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
The Word Tanzīl implies to the piece wise sending down of the Qur’ān by Allāh to the Rasūl -salallāhu alayhi wasallam as was mentioned by the Ulamā in ‘Ulūmi Al-Qur’ān.
As for naming a child as Tanzīl, it seems far fetched because it’s meaning cannot be applicable to a human in respect to the Technical meaning it holds in the Sharī’ah. As for it’s linguistic meaning, it is used sometimes to mean descent or arrival of a thing like Allāh said:
فإذا نزل بساحتهم
“Then when it descends in their courtyards”
That it’s technical and linguistic meaning does not add up to a human is enough reason to discourage it’s naming. This is our Advice. And what we have said applies to also Tanzīlu Ar-Rahmān, and Allāh knows best.
Know, may Allāh illumine your heart that naming with excellent and applicable names is required by the Sharī’ah.
