#884: Ruling on making Du`a with the Statements of Du`a from the Qur’ān while in the Position of Prostration

884. QUESTION

I have a question…….. If The prohibition of the recitation of the Qur’an on sujood is well established, does this include the dua therein too? I mean are the various dua in the Qur’an also prohibited on sujood?
Wa alaikum salam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.

ANSWER:

Wa alaykumu salām wa warahmatullah wabarakātuh.

Know and may Allāh have mercy on us all that one of the reason Allāh mentioned Du’ā in the Qur’ān is to teach us how to call on Him. Thus, as long as what you intend while making use of such statements is Du’ā, then there is nothing wrong in using them to call upon Allāh in the position of prostration.

The Hadīth of Ali ibn Abī Taalib Radiyallāhu anhu in which he said: The Rasūl -alaihi salam- forbade me to recite Qur’ān when bowing and prostrating (Muslim)prohibits us from reciting the Qur’ān while bowing or prostrating just as one reads while standing in prayer or just as one reads when he intends to read the Qur’ān to get reward or to ponder over the verses.

As long as such intentions does not occur to the mind when one uses such statements in prostration, then it is not regarded as recitation.

While doing such you should stick strictly to the direct statement of Du’ā and not read the whole verse so as not to fall into the category of reading the Qur’ān.

For example, the one that says while prostrating

وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ يَقُولُ رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Such a person can be categorized as reading the Qur’ān in prostration.

However, the one that sticks strictly to the Du’ā

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Will be classify as making Du’ā. He will still be regarded as making Du’ā even if the statement of Du’ā in the Quran is a full verse as long as his intention for reading it is for Du’ā and not for recitation. For example, the Du’ā in suratul Aal-Imran

And Allāh knows best.

Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.
