Imaam Ibn Hajar Al-‘Asqalaani – rahimahullaah – said:

11. It is reported from Abu -Hurairah- radiyallaahu anhu – who said: The Messenger of Allah – salallaahu alayhi wasallam – said:
”None of you should drink while standing ”

Transmitted and recorded by Imaam Muslim in his ”Sahih”’#2025.

This Hadith teaches us the following:

1. It is Haram to drink while standing .Though, there are different of opinion of ulamaa on this issue , majority of the ulamaa considered drinking while standing to be disliked (Makruh), this is also the opinion of Shaykh Muhammad bn Saalih Al-Uthaymeen -rahimahullah and the evidence is against those that considered it Haram with no restriction or Maslaha like Ibn Hazm .

2. It shows how the Messenger of Allah salallahu-alayhi wasallam care for his ummah, for it is easy to drink while sitting compare to standing . Allah says about the Messenger Salallahu-alayhi wasallam in Surah At-Taubah,

Verse 128:ٌ
“Certainly a Messenger has come to you from among yourselves; grievous to him is your falling into distress, excessively respecting you and he is compassionate to the believers” .

3. It also shows that Islam is a complete religion that deals with every aspect of life .

4. It also indicate that it is not allowed to imitate the disbelievers in our day to day activities , for they are the ones (disbelievers) that usually drinks while standing .

5. Drinking while standing immediately after eating might be dangerous to the body system at times .For this reason , it is prefer and better to drink while sitting .

Allaahu A’alam!

Baarakallaahu feekum!
