Imaam Ibn Hajar Al-‘Asqalaani – rahimahullaah – said:
It is reported from Ibn Umar radiyallaahu anhumah- who said – The Messenger of Allah -salallaahu alayhi wasallam said:
“whosoever imitates any people (in their actions or believes) is considered to be one of them.”
Transmitted and recorded by Imaam Abu Dawud in his sunan #4031 and Ibn Habban graded it as sahih and also Imam Al Albani rahimahullaah declared it as sahih
COMMENTARY
The hadith shows the importance of the following:
1. It indicates that whosoever imitates and follows any people in their way of life or action is considered to be one of them. This means, whosoever imitates the transgressors in their actions and followed their footsteps is considered to be one of them.
2. It shows that it is abhorrent and disliked for one to sit and gather where people commit sins and criminal acts. This will make one not to see the gravity of the sin committed again.
3. It also shows whoever imitates the kuffar(disbelievers) in their mode of dressing in what is specific to them ONLY is considered to be one of them even if he does not believe in what they worship.
4. It encourages one to always be with the pious ones so that he can benefit from them.
5. It indicates one should always strengthen and increase the number of the pious people and the true scholars not the people of bid’a.
