#1020: Is There Any Du’a Against Stammering?
“Assalam alaikum. Is there any Du’a as a remedy for a stammering child? Jazakumullahu khair”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salam Warahmatullah Wabarakaatuh.
We do not know of any Du’a in the Sunnah where a cure for stammering is mentioned except for what Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah mentioned in the Tibb that the use of the Miswak helps against drowsiness, pushes back sleep, clears the vocals and help with speech.
While some Ulama refer to the verse:
رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي* وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي* وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِّن لِّسَانِي * يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي
“My Lord, expand for me my heart, make easy for me my task and untie the knots from my tongue that they may understand my words”
Imam Ibn Kathir rahimahullah mentioned in his Tafsir that Musa alayhi As-Salaam had stammering on his tongue since he was a child in the palace of Fir’awn and that this Du’a was one he did that Allah may take away from him his stammer.
But, you must realize that stammering is not by itself a blemish or an illness on a child and you should not treat it as such or see it as an abnormality.
We have seen several people who were stamerrers before and who Allah helped through it; and who today speak very good fluency without difficulty. Therefore, what is expected of you is to keep helping the child, frequent discussions with him and keep encouraging him and be desperate in your Du’a for indeed Allah answers the Du’a of the desperate.
Barakallahu fikum.
Jazakumullahu Khayran.
