#1142: Regarding The One Afflicted With The Evil Eye
Asalamun alaykum.
I heard a lecture from a notable scholar, saying when someone is inflicted by the evil eyes, the eviled eyed person should be identified and one his/her cloth should be rinsed and the water should be bathed for victim so as to get rid of the predicaments that befall him/her as result of the evil eyes.
How true is this?
If true, is it applicable in other ways??
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salam Warahmatullah Wa barakaatuh.
Alhamdulillah, what you heard is from the Hadith that was recorded by Imam Abu Isa At-Tirmidhi rahimahullah from Ibn ‘Abbas radiyallahu anhuma:
لو كان شيء سابق القدر لسبقته العين وإذا استغسلتم فاغسلوا
“If there was something that could upturn destiny, it is the evil eye. And whenever any of you is requested to take a bath (to use the water to cure the one inflicted with his evil eye, then let him do so”
Shaykh Abdurrahman ‘Alaa Al-Mubaarakfuri said in his Commentary of At-Tirmidhi:
“And this was a known thing to them. So he commanded them not to refuse it if such is requested from them…. And the bathing of the one who has inflicted someone with the evil eye was something the known to the custom of the People and that it cures the evil eye. It therefore becomes obligatory on him. But it has been established earlier that he should be made to give food to the distressed and this is better”
“And he did not specify in this Hadith the kind of bathing that is required but it has come in the Hadith of Sahl bn Hanif that was recorded by Ahmad and An-Nasa’i and considered Sahih by Ibn Hibbaan from the Chain of Adh-Dhuhri from Abu Umaamah bn Sahl bn Hanif that his father narrated to him from the Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasallam said..”
And in the Hadith is that the Rasul salallahu alayhi wasallam commanded that he commanded Aamir to wash his face, his two hands, and his knees, the sides of his feet and the inners of his sleeves in a bowl which was then used to wipe the face, the hands, the back and head of the afflicted.
And Allah knows best.
Al-Mubaarakfuri went on to mention that this is a thing that is known by customary practice that it happens and it works. And for those that cast doubt at this, they are living in hallucination for if this has been experienced and is well known to the People.
And Allah knows best.
Barakallahu fikum
Jazakumullahu Khayran
