#145: Ruling on Rearing of Dogs
*ANSWER*
Alhamdulillāh.
It is not permissible for a Muslim to rare dogs as pets due to the Hadīth in which the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – said:
من اتخذ كلبًا إلا كلب ماشية أو صيد أو زرع انتقص من أجره كل يوم قيراط
_”Whomsoever takes a dog for raring, with the exemption of the hunting dog or that used to guard farms, his rewards will reduce by day by the measure of a Qīrāt”_
Recorded by both Imām Bukhārī and Muslim in the Sahīhayn from Abū Hurayrah – radiyallāhu anhu.
The Qīrāt is of a very magnanimous quantity that isn’t quantifiable.
Imām An-Nawawī – rahimahullāh – said in the Majmū’, commenting on the Hadīth:
_”The Prophet – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – gave a dispensation as regards the hunting dog and that used to guard livestock. And in some other narration, and that used to guard the farm. And all the fellows of our School and other than them have formed a consensus on the impermissibility of raring dogs for other motives such as its mere love, for want of pride, and so on. This is Harām by consensus”_
