QUESTION

CAN A GOAT BE USED FOR THE SACRIFICE OF ĪD?

“As-Salaamu Alaykum. Please someone is asking if goat can be used for eid sacrifice”

ANSWER

Alhamdulillah; It is permissible but the best is a well-fed ram, at least 6months old to some scholars and at least 1year old to the majority.

ﻭﻗﺎﻝ ﺍﺑﻦ ﻋﺒﺪ ﺍﻟﺒﺮ ﺭﺣﻤﻪ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ : ” ﻻ ﺃﻋﻠﻢ ﺧﻼﻓﺎً ﺃﻥ ﺍﻟﺠﺬﻉ ﻣﻦ ﺍﻟﻤﻌﺰ ﻭﻣﻦ ﻛﻞ ﺷﻲﺀ ﻳﻀﺤﻰ ﺑﻪ ﻏﻴﺮ ﺍﻟﻀﺄﻥ ﻻ ﻳﺠﻮﺯ ، ﻭﺇﻧﻤﺎ ﻳﺠﻮﺯ ﻣﻦ ﺫﻟﻚ ﻛﻠﻪ ﺍﻟﺜﻨﻲ ﻓﺼﺎﻋﺪﺍً ، ﻭﻳﺠﻮﺯ ﺍﻟﺠﺬﻉ ﻣﻦ ﺍﻟﻀﺄﻥ ﺑﺎﻟﺴﻨﺔ ﺍﻟﻤﺴﻨﻮﻧﺔ ” ﺍﻧﺘﻬﻰ ﻣﻦ “ﺗﺮﺗﻴﺐ ﺍﻟﺘﻤﻬﻴﺪ” )10/267

Imaam Ibn Abdu Al-Barr – rahimahullah – said:

“I do not know of any differences (among the scholars) that the goat which is Jadha’ and of other animals except for that of ram as not been permissible. But what is permissible in all of it is a Thaniyy and above. But for the sheep, it is permissible to use the Jadha’ that has completed a year” (Tarteebu At-Tamheed 10/267)

ﻗﺎﻝ ﺍﻟﺸﻨﻘﻴﻄﻲ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻷﺿﻮﺍﺀ :

ﻓﺬﻫﺐ ﻣﺎﻟﻚ – ﺭﺣﻤﻪ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ – ﻭﺃﺻﺤﺎﺑﻪ: ﺇﻟﻰ ﺃﻥ ﺍﻟﻤﺠﺰﺉ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﻀﺤﻴﺔ: ﺟﺬﻉ ﺍﻟﻀﺄﻥ، ﻭﺛﻨﻲ ﺍﻟﻤﻌﺰ ﻭﺍﻟﺒﻘﺮ، ﻭﺍﻹﺑﻞ. ﻭﺟﺬﻉ ﺍﻟﻀﺄﻥ ﻋﻨﺪﻫﻢ: ﻫﻮ ﻣﺎ ﺃﻛﻤﻞ ﺳﻨﺔ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺍﻟﻤﺸﻬﻮﺭ، ﻭﺛﻨﻲ ﺍﻟﻤﻌﺰ ﻋﻨﺪﻫﻢ: ﻫﻮ ﻣﺎ ﺃﻛﻤﻞ ﺳﻨﺔ، ﻭﺩﺧﻞ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﺜﺎﻧﻴﺔ ﺩﺧﻮﻻ ﺑﻴﻨﺎ، ﻓﺎﻟﺪﺧﻮﻝ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﺴﻨﺔ ﺍﻟﺜﺎﻧﻴﺔ، ﺩﺧﻮﻻ ﺑﻴﻨﺎ ﻫﻮ ﺍﻟﻔﺮﻕ ﻋﻨﺪﻫﻢ ﺑﻴﻦ ﺟﺬﻉ ﺍﻟﻀﺄﻥ، ﻭﺛﻨﻲ ﺍﻟﻤﻌﺰ. ))

Ash-Shanqeeti said: “Maalik – rahimahullah – and his fellows hold that what is ok to be used as sacrifice is a sheep which is Jadha’, and a goat, cow or camel that is Thaniyya. What is meant by a sheep which is Jadha’ according to them is the one that has completed a year according to the dominant verdict. And the goat that is Thaniyya according to them is that which has completed a year and began the second and is almost completed a second. The fact that it has entered clearly into the second year is the difference between the prescribed sheep and the prescribed goat.” (Adwaa Al-Bayaan)
The majority of the scholars say that the best is the ram, and in its absence, the goat, cow or camel can be used. Imaam Al-Baaji – rahimahullah – mentioned this.

In summary, it b is permissible either due to inability to gain access to a ram or due to poverty.
