Q&A (Fatwa)

#54. SITTING BETWEEN THE TWO KHUTBAH ON THE DAY OF EID

”  Assalamu Alaikum, I have a question and my question goes thus: During Eid Khutbah after the prayer is there sitting in between the Khutbah like Jumuat Khutbah or there is no sitting on the Eid Khutbah? May Almighty Allah rewards you with Jannatul Firdausi. Assalamu Alaikum”

ANSWER

Wa alaykum salaam warahmatullaah wabarakaatuh

And may Allah reward you too with the best of rewards, and the abode of Firdaws, aameen.

Know o beloved one, that the Ulamaa differed on this matter.

The position of ‘Ataa is that the Khutbah of Eid is one and that there is no sitting in between it as opposed to the Jumu’a. He mentioned that this was the position of the Khulafaa Ar-Raashidun: Abubakr, Umar, and Uthman – radiyallaahu an hum. This is also the position favoured by Shaykh Sayyid Saabiq in Fiqhu As-Sunnah and Muhammad Nasiruddin Al-Albaani – rahimahumullaah.

The verdict of the four Imaams and Imam Ibn Hazm Al-Andalusi – rahimahumullaah – is that the eid like the Jumu’a has two Khutbahs with a brief sitting in between both.

While some of the Ulamaa of the time are strict in their difference and hold that one of them must be wrong, the position that is soundest and balanced is that adopted by Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Saalih Al-Uthaymin and Shaykh Muhammad Al-Hasan Ibn Ad-Daduw – hafidhahullaah – that there is no harm upon the Imaam to observe any of both due to the difference of opinion on this matter.

The questioner may choose to ask for the evidences used by both parties in their arguments for and against if he wills and we would be glad to respond to that. Our intent in the above is to point at what is summary and best.
