#902: On Wearing Gold- Painted Items By Men
“Question:
Assalamulaikum.
Pls I’d like to know, if a watch is gold color but neither made of gold nor plated with gold since gold can be imitated but mixing copper and Alloy used in imitating gold..
Does the hadiths forbidding men from using gold Jewelry still applies.
In simple terms, is it the color gold that is forbidden or the material gold itself or both?”
ANSWER:
Wa Alaykum Salām Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
Bārakallāhu Fīkum. It is difficult to understand why a Muslim man who knows that the wearing of Gold by men is Harām will want to wear Gold painted items.
Why this attraction to the Gold colour?
Isn’t it clear that whoever sees you in gold coloured wrist watch will assume it is Gold? You may end up been emulated in that? Or been mistaken for someone that transgresses the limit of Allāh?
As for the forbiddance, then what is known and consensed upon is the forbiddance of gold itself not it’s colour. And what is the Gold colour except a certain shade of yellow?
The use of Gold and its alloy that maintains all of it’s Properties is what is undoubtedly Harām for the men of this Ummah, not it’s Colour.
That said, it is not Harām to use its colour but for the reasons we have mentioned above, avoid it.
