22. MAKING DU’A FOR A DEAD KAAFIR
“Salamun alaikum pls ya admin can one pray for a deceased kafir for them to receive the lightest punishment, jazakhallahu khayran”
ANSWER
Wa alaykum salaam
Alhamdulillaah Wa As-Salaatu Wa As-Salaamu Ala a Rasulillaah!
It is not permissible to pray for a Kaafir to earn Allah’s forgiveness after death. The entire Ummah are at a consensus regarding this. As for seeking that Allah lightens his punishment, then some Ulamaa mentioned that it is highly disliked. What is correct however is that it is also Haraam since seeking for lightening of punishment is also some form of mercy.
Imaam An-Nawawi – rahimahullaah – mentioned this in ‘Al-Majmu’.
