Imaam Ibn Hajar Al-‘Asqalaani – rahimahullaah said:
It is reported from Ibn Mas’hood radiyallaahu anhu- who said The Messenger of Allah -salallaahu alayhi wasallam said:
“The believer is not a slanderer, he does not curse others, and he does not engage himself in shameful deeds and he is not an outrageous persons.”
Transmitted and recorded by Imaam At-Tirmidhi in his “Sunan”#1977 and graded it as Hasan. Al-Hakim graded as Sahih in “Mustadrak”#1/57). Daraqutni said that it is probably Mauquf(I.e traced back only to a companion not the messenger of Allah salallaahu alayhi wasallam). And Al Albani declared the hadith as Sahih in “Assahiha”#20.
COMMENTARY
The hadith shows the importance of the following:
1. It indicates that a believer is not a slanderer. What it means by slandering is to make a bad speech or false accusation about your brother which is not true about him. You just want to spoil his image in front of the people.
The Messenger of Allah said in an authentic hadith which is transmitted by Imaam Muslim:
“If what you say about him is true, then you have back bitten him, but if it is not true then you have slandered
him.” From this hadith, we derived that to say a false statement or to make a false accusation about your brother in his absence is regarded as slandering in Islam.
This is grevious sin because it sows enmity, discord and rancour between the Muslim Ummah. Many are so busy nowadays perpetuating this act and they see it as nothing. But slandering is no walk in the pack. It is one of the most dangerous and disgusting acts one could ever commit.
2. It shows that a believer does not curse others. This shows that he always give excuse to his brothers where they have made mistakes or errors. He does not rush in making conclusion about his brothers. When one curses others, he is not helping them in any form.
But rather, he is even adding more problems to them. Then, instead of cursing others, one should pray for them, have good thought about them and one should look at their good qualities so that he can overlook their mistakes.
A man at the time of the messenger of Allah salallaahu alayhi wasallam was well known as a drunkered.Once he was brought to the messenger alayhi wasallam in drunken state, and it was decreed that he should be lashed. After a few days, he was found committing the same act ( i. e drinking alcohol). After being lashed this time around, and he was about to leave, one of the companions radiyallaahu anhum said: ” May Allah curse him! How often he has being lashed!”. The messenger of Allah salallaahu alayhi wasallam turn to the companion and said: “Do not curse him! By Allah, I know that he loves Allah and His Messenger”.

3. It indicates that a believer does not indulge himself in shameful acts. Shameful acts are those deeds that are forbidden in the Quran and hadith like backbiting, gossiping, lying, fornicating, zina , stealing etc.
4. It illustrates that a believer is not an outrageous person. But rather, he is easy going and soft in relating with other Muslims.
