Imaam Ibn Hajar Al-‘Asqalaani – rahimahullaah – said:
It is reported from Aisha radiyallaahu anha who said The Messenger of Allah -salallaahu alayhi wasallam said:
“Do not vilify the dead, indeed they have seen the result of their deeds that they forwarded before them.”
Transmitted and recorded by Imaam Bukhaari in his “Sahih”#1393.
COMMENTARY
The hadith shows the importance of the following:
1. It indicates that it disliked for one to revile the dead. We have already established in many aahadith that abusing and slandering is highly disliked in Islam. It is also disliked to abuse the dead whether the dead is a Muslim or a kafir. This is because ….The Messenger of Allah salallaahu alayhi wasallam did not differentiate between the dead. He said: ” Do not revile the dead….”( I.e whether a Muslim or a kafir).
From this hadith, it is Haraam to insult the dead of a kafir and is a sin if one does that. Then what about those ignoramus that insult the companions? Indeed, their punishment is more great, grievous and severe on the day of judgement and they have been cursed by Allah Subuhanahu wat’ala. Allah says in Suratul An-Noor, Verse 23: Surely those who accuse chaste believing women, unaware (of the evil), are cursed in this world and the hereafter, and they shall have a grievous chastisement.
2. It shows that people will surely see the result of their deeds( I.e whether good or bad.) And Allah does not oppress any one. What one planted in this dunya is what he is going to harvest after his death. If one does good deeds, then he should expect good news of mercy from Allah. And if otherwise, he should blame no one but himself. Allah says: “….and your Lord does not deal unjustly with anyone.”
3. It shows the destiny or situation of people after death is ONLY known by Allah except those people that Allah Has mentioned their abode clearly in the Quran like disbelievers if they died in their kufr, they will definitely be in hell without a doubt. On the other hand, the only people that have been given assurance of Paradise are the companions. And this is because Allah Has testified to that and He is pleased with them all.
Allah says: And (as for) the foremost, the first of the Muhajirs and the Ansars, and those who followed them in goodness, Allah is well pleased with them and they are well pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide in them for ever; that is the mighty achievement.
