DAILY POST #100
Imaam Ibn Hajar Al-‘Asqalaani – rahimahullaah – said:
It is reported from Ibn Abbas radiyallaahu anhumah- who said – The Messenger of Allah -salallaahu alayhi wasallam said:
“Whosoever listened to the discussion of some people, whereas they do not like him to do that, molten led will be poured into his ears on the Day of Judgement.”
Transmitted and recorded by Imaam Bukhaari in his “Sahih”#7042.
COMMENTARY
The hadith shows the importance of the following:
1. It indicates that it is disliked and abhorrent for one to listen to the talk of some people, when they do not like him to do that. This shows that when some people are discussing separately, one should not interfere or listen to their talk as long as you are not called or invited. One should not spy on them. And Allah Has warned against following people’s secrets or faults or spying on them or interfering in their personal life or backbiting or making gossip about them.
Imaam Bukhari transmitted in Al Adabul Mufrad from the Riwaaya of Saheed Al Muqburi who said: I passed by Ibn Umar together with a man discussing, I then tried to join up with them, but Ibn Umar hit my chest and said: when you see two people discussing, do not join them until they give you permission to do so.” And Ibn AbdulBarr said: It is not permissible for one to enter some people while they are conferring together in private”
2. It shows that any one that listened to the talk of people while it is disliked by those people, Allah will severely punish him by pouring molten led into his ears on the day of resurrection. From this, it is clear that this act is not a joke but a dangerous or a grievous act which can lead one to a severe torment on the day of resurrection. We need to be careful of interfering in people’s discussion.
When one is called, then he can join up the discussion. But if one is not called, then he should allow them to finish first before coming closer to them. Because when one interfere in their discussion, he might make the talk inconvenient and they will feel heavy and shy to excuse the person whereas deeply in their mind, they would have preferred that he was not present in the discussion. Thus, we should not make things difficult for our brothers so that Allah will also lighten our affairs.
3. It shows the permissibility of discussing privately. Therefore, one should not feel sad or get angry just because some people are discussing and they did not call him into the discussion, for it is allowed to counsel privately.
