It is reported from Ibn Umar radiyallaahu anhumah- who said – The Messenger of Allah -salallaahu alayhi wasallam said:
“Whosoever elevates himself and walks haughtily, will meet Allah on the day of Resurrection while Allah is angry with Him.”
Transmitted and recorded by Imaam Bukhaari in “Al-Adab Al- Mufrad”#549 and Imaam Al-Haakim in “Mustadrak”(#1/128). Imaam Al-Albaani declared the hadith to be Sahih in “Assahiha”#543.
COMMENTARY
The hadith shows the importance of the following:
1. It shows that it is disliked and abhorrent for one to be pompous in himself. Pride and Might belongs to Allah and whosoever vies with Allah on it, will be punished on the day of Resurrection.
It is reported from Abu Hurairah and Abu Sa”eed Al khudri Radiyallaahu anhumah whom both said- The messenger of Allah salallaahu alayhi wasallam said: “Might is my cloak and pride is my garment. Whoever vies with Me for either of them, I will punish him.”
(Transmitted and recorded by Imaam Bukhaari in Al-Adabul Mufrad#552 and Imaam Muslim in his “Sahih”#2620.
2. It indicates that it is Haraam for one to walk with majesty and arrogance as if he can penetrate the earth. Allah says: ” And do not walk on the earth with conceit and arrogance. Verily, you can neither rend nor penetrate the earth, nor can you attain a stature like the mountains in height.
3. It encourages one to be humble, kind, gentle and soft for Allah’s sake. Ibn Mas’ud Radiyallaahu said: “A man came to the Messenger of Allah salallaahu alayhi wasallam and spoke to him regarding a matter.
While he was speaking to the Messenger Salallaahu alayhi wasallam, the man shivered.” Seeing this, the Messenger salallaahu alayhi wasallam said:” Take it easy! I am just a son of a woman from Quraysh who used to eat dried meat.” Therefore, whosoever is humble for Allah’s sake, Allah will elevates him in this dunya and Hereafter.
