DAILY POST #107
Imaam Ibn Hajar Al-‘Asqalaani – rahimahullaah – said:
It is reported from Bahz Ibn Hakeem, from his Father, from his Grandfather radiyallaahu anhu- who said
The Messenger of Allah -salallaahu alayhi wasallam said:
“ Woe to him who lies in his speech in order to make the people laugh, Woe to him! Woe to him! ”
Transmitted and recorded by Imaam Abu Dawud in his “Sunan”#4990 and Imaam At-Tirmidhi in his “Sunan”#2315 and Imaam Nisaahi in Alkubra#6/509. Imaam Al-Albaani declared the hadith as Hasan in Sahihu Al-jami‘#7136.
COMMENTARY
The hadith shows the importance of the following:
♦ It indicates that it is abhorrent and proscribed for one to say false statement in order to make other people laugh. Unfortunately, people are accustomed to this type of attitude in this our era. They fabricate lies in order to make jokes, impress others and to make the people laugh. This attitude is forbidden in Islam and one should beware of it. May Allah not count us among them, Aameen.
♦ It shows the gravity of fabricating lies in order to make others laugh.
♦ It is Haraam for one to listen to such a speech that is cooked of lies or false episode if he is aware that the statement is not true. Rather, he should advice and caution him of such behavior. And if that is not possible, he should stand up from the place until they engage in another discussion. Otherwise, staying there shows that he testified to the lies and testifying to falsehood is forbidden in Islam.
