#357: Ruling on Couples calling each other Pet Names
“What is the Islamic ruling on a couples calling themselves pet names like sweetheart,my love ,baby etc. Does it look like imitating the west ?”
ANSWER
Alhamdulillāh!
There is nothing wrong with calling your spouse with pet names as long as those names are not bad/evil names.
It is established in the Sunah that the Rasul – salallahu alayhi wasallam – used to call A’isha – radiyallaahu Anha – humayra which means a small red – skinned maiden.
It cannot be said that such pet names are a form of emulating the kuffaar for the fact that such names increase love between couples and strengthen the bond of marital relationship, which are both aims that are encouraged and sought in the Shari’ah. It doesn’t matter whether the Kuffaar do it or not.
However, we advise that those that mentioned that their children call their mothers/fathers by such names outside the home, try to correct the children.
May Allaah bless our homes and make our homes houses of light where the dhikr of Allāh are mentioned morning and night, Āmīn.
