Assalāmu alaykum Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.

Respected brothers and sisters,
You are all welcome to this morning’s session of the Halqah where we have been making an exegesis on the Nasīhatu Ahli Az-Zamān of the Mujāhid Imām Shaykh Uthmān Dan Fodio – rahimahullāh.

The Shaykh – rahimahullāh- said;

And the one upon whom be peace said ‘And hold into my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, hold unto it with your molars’

“The Hadīth was recorded by At-Tirmidhī”

“Umar Ibn ‘Abdil’Azīz – rahimahullāh – said the Messenger of Allāh – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – and the Leaders after him established and left behind them their traditions. To emulate those is betruthing the Book of Allāh, being in compliance with obeying Allāh, it is strength in the Dīn of Allāh. It is not permissible for anyone to change or modify it…”

“It is not also permissible for him to take a meditative look at the opinions and positions of those that oppose it and follow the Path other than that of the Believers. Whosoever does that, Allāh will leave him to that to which he inclines, and make Jahannam his abode, and what a bad return place it is.”

This statement of ‘Umar Ibn ‘Abdil Azīz is quoted in many of the books of the Ulamā in the past.

In the statement, he draws a match between the Hadīth mentioned above which was narrated by the Companion ‘Irbād Ibn As-Sāriyah – radiyallāhu ‘anhu – and the verse of the Qur’ān where Allāh said;

“And whosoever contends with the Messenger even after guidance has been plainly conveyed to him, and follows a path other than that becoming to men of Faith, We shall leave him in the path he has chosen, and land him in Hell,- what an evil refuge”

The verse established that the Path of the Believers is the Ijmā of the Sahābah and the Ummah after them as the Ulamā have pointed out.

It also shows that the Khulafā Ar-Rāahidūn after the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – make Ijtihād and are to be followed.
And their traditions and edicts are to be taken as part of the Sunnah.

Imām Ash-Shawkānī – rahimahullāh – mentioned in Fat’hu Ar-Rabbānī that what is meant by this is that the Khulafā Ar-Rāshidīn, being the closest to the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – knew better the Sunnah and made interpretations of it.

They practiced it and implemented its details,
and where there is no plain text from the Qur’ān or the Sunnah, they exercised Ijtihād using the textual evidence as the backbone.

The Ulamā explained that what is meant by the Sunnah of the Khalafā Ar-Rāshidūn does not mean that they could make things Halāl or Harām like the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – or that they be followed and emulated where they went out of the Sunnah of the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – by mistake.

Ibn Hazm – rahimahullāh – mentioned this in Al-Ihkām Fī Usūli Al-Ahkām

We ask Allāh to grant us Tawfīq in the observance and following of the Sunnah of the Rasūl – salallāhu alayhi wasallam – and to guide us to that which is best, āmīn.

We shall pause here for the week.
Bārakallāhu Fīkum
Jazākumullāhu Khayran.

Assalāmu ‘Alaykum Warahmatullāh Wabarakātuh.
