(hadith on the desirability of performing i’tikaf in Ramadan)
عن أبي هريرة- رضي الله عنه- قال كان النبي- صلى الله عليه وسلم-يعتكف في كل رمضان عشرة أيام فلما كان العام الذي قبض فيه اعتكف عشرين يوما”
رواه البخاري
On the authority of Abu Huraira- radiyaAllahu anhu who said that the prophet- sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam- used to perform i’tikaf every year in the month of Ramadan for ten days but on the year of his death, he stayed in I’tikaf for twenty days.
Al-Bukhari
I’tikaf means secluding in the masjid for the purposes of Ibaadah for it recommended period of time while observing it dos and don’ts .
LESSONS FROM THE HADITH
1. I’tikaf is a regular practice of the prophet- sallallahu alayhi wa sallam especially during the last ten nights of Ramadan.
2. It is also highly recommended sunnah for us to follow.
3. One is able to free himself from all worldly distractions and focus on getting closer to Allah through various act of lbaadah.
4. It gives one the opportunity to witness laylatul Qadr since it is most expected in one of the last ten nights of Ramadan.
May Allah accept our Ibaadah and count us among those who will
witness laylatul Qadr while in Ibaadah. Aameen.
