Imaam Ibn Qudaamah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullaah-
Said:
Optional fasting.
Know verily that, it is highly recommended to fast the optional fasting after the obligatory.
Thus, the following kinds of fasting are recommended by the sunnah:
1. Fasting six days during the month of Shawwal, the immediate month following Ramadan.
2. Fasting the day of ( the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah) provided the person is not performing Hajj that year.
3. Fasting during the month of Al- Muharram especially the tenth day ( the Day of A’shura), and if possible the 9th and the 11th of the same month according to some authentic narrations.
4. Fasting the 13th, the 14th and 15th of every month.
5. Fasting Mondays and Thursdays.
Moreover, the best form of the optional fasting is that of prophet Dawud alayhissalam. For He used to fast on alternate days.
In this context, Abdullahi Ibn Amru radiyallaahu anhu reported that the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam said:
“The most beloved prayer to Allah is that of dawud, and the beloved fast to Allah is that of Dawud. He used to sleep for half of the night and then pray for one third of the night and again sleep for its sixth part, and he used to fast on alternate days.”
Transmitted and recorded by Imaam Bukhaari in His ‘Sahih”#1979 and Imaam Muslim in His ‘Sahih’#1159.
