Morals of Eating

📬 DAILY POST#260

Imaam Ibn Qudaamah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullaah-
Said:

*Morals of Eating*

Know verily that, we have several Adaab of eating. Some manners comes before eating, during eating, or after eating.

Before eating, one is recommended to carryout the following manners:

1. Washing of the two hands before eating in order to cleanse away any dirt.

2. The food should be placed on a lower dining table rather than a high one, for this act is more closer to the Sunnah of the beloved Messenger of Allah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam and it also shows tawaadi’.

3. One is also recommended to sit on the left sole while erecting the right one.

4. One should intend to strengthen oneself by eating in order to be able to worship Allah properly rather than just mere eating in order to satisfy oneself.

5. One should avoid excessive eating. For the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam said:

*”ما ملأ ابن آدم وعاء شرا من بطنه، حسب ابن آدم أكلات يقمن صلبه، فإن كان لا محالة، فثلث لطعامه، وثلث لشرابه، وثلث لنفسه”*

Meaning:

” A human being has not filled any vessel which is worse than a belly. Enough for the son of Adam are some mouthfuls which can keep his back straight; but if there is no escape he should fill it a third with food, a third with drink, and leave a third empty.”

Transmitted and recorded by Imaam At-Tirmidhi in his ‘Sunan#2380. Shaykh Al Albaani declared it as Sahih in ‘Assahiha’#5265.

6. One should not eat except when he is hungry.

7. Lastly, one should be content with what Allah bestowed upon him of His wealth and he should hasten to sharing with others.

*Allaahu A’alam! Baarakallaahu feekum!*
