_Imaam Ibn Qudaamah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullaah-_
Said:
*LEVELS OF AMBIGUOUS MATTERS.*
Know verily that, the doubtful matters are those things that are not clear on whether they are Haram or not. But to be at the safer side, it is beloved and encouraged for one to safeguard oneself from them.
In this regard, it is reported from Annu’maan bn Basheer radiyallaahu anhumah who said_ The Messenger of Allah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam said:
“Verily, both lawful and unlawful things are apparent, but in between them there are
unclear things And most people have no knowledge concerning them. So, he who safeguards himself from these doubtful things, safeguards his religion and his honor. And he who indulges in these unclear things, is liable to fall into Haraam. Its similitude is like that of a shepherd, who pastures near the Hima (boundary areas of someone else), and at any moment he is liable to fall into it._ Verily, every king has a Hima and verily, the Hima of Allah(on earth) is what He declared unlawful.”
Transmitted and recorded by Imaam Bukhaari in his ‘Sahih’#52 and Imam Muslim in his ‘Sahih’#1599.
In the Hadith above, the Messenger of Allah Sallallaahu alayhi wasallam Has divided things into three categories, which are; lawful, unlawful and between them are doubtful matters.
The lawful and unlawful things are obvious to people. However, the ambiguous matters are not clear to most people.
The examples of doubtful matters are much. But the common examples can be classified into two. Which are;
*1.)* Doubting the cause of Halal or Haram of a matter. It also has four divisions,
*A.* The thing is original permissible in the sharia. But one is doubtful about it. Then it is waajib for one to shun away from it.
The example of this is For one to shot an animal while hunting. And the animal falls into water. Later on, he finds the animal died in the water. However, he is not sure whether the animal died due to the shot or drowning. Thus, this is *Haram* for one to consume. This is because the *Aslu* is Haram.
*B*. Knowing that something is permissible. But one is doubting whether it is prohibited or not.
