Calamities of the Tongue 05: Mockery

📬 DAILY POST#418

_Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullāh-_
Said:

*5.*Mockery.

This also involves underrating others and belittling them, exposing their errors in the form of jesting and flattering. And it can even be in form of mimicking others in action, voice and with allusion.

Hence, one should beware of these attitudes for it brings about hatred and grudges.

*6.* Exposing secret, lack of fulfilling promises and lying in statement and oath.

Know verily that, these are also parts of the calamities of speech which are forbidden except where there is rukhsah like lying in order to reconcile between two individuals, or narrations of the husband to his wife and lying in terms of war. These are permissible, but it should not pass its limit and it should be well monitored and cultured.

In this regard, Umm kulthum radiyallāhu anha reported that she heard the messenger of Allāh(ﷺ) saying:

_A liar is not one who tries to bring reconciliation amongst people and speaks good (in order to avert dispute), or he conveys good. Ibn Shihab said: I did not hear that exemption was granted in anything what the people speak as lie but in three cases: in battle, for bringing reconciliation amongst persons and the narration of the words of the husband to his wife, and the narration of the words of a wife to her husband (in a twisted form in order to bring reconciliation between them)._

However, pun is permissible in dare needs and in a special situations. But one should not take it one’s habitual act, for it resembles lies.
.
In this context, shakh-khīr said:

_I accompanied ‘Imran ibn Husayn to Basra. Every day he used to recite poetry to us and he: “Indirect allusions give ample scope to avoid lying._”
