_Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh-_
Said:
Know that, for one to feel happy due to the presence of others during one’s act of ‘Ibādāt indicates the presence of show off in one’s heart.
And due to the sweetness of what one feels in one’s heart, their presence is beloved to one and not disliked.
Rather, one may even go to the extent of drawing the attention of others through allusive means and not be professing.
Moreover, the show off may be obscured than what we mentioned. This is when it is not done through allusion nor professing but through the nature of appearance in order to send a message to people.
like being yellow or slim to indicate much fasting, lowering of the voice to show piety and sincerity, dryness of the lips, the sign of tears on the face to denote fear of Allāh, slumbering to indicate long tahajjud in the night and the likes.
However, there is also another show off which is more obscured. In this case, one doesn’t show others one’s ‘Ibādāt. Rather, one decided to seclude oneself from the sights of others.
But despite this, whenever one meets others, one loves they should first make salam to one, meet one with a smiling face, honor and serve one’s needs, be lenient towards one and recognize one’s status.
Thus, whenever others neglects all what one expects from them, be it honor, respect, reputation and the likes, one feels unhappy and upset as though one’s heart is requesting for proper respect due to the ‘Ibādāt that is done in the hidden.
