Ways of Treating Show Off

📬 DAILY POST#492

_Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh-_
Said:

*WAYS OF TREATING SHOWOFF.*

Know verily – may the blessings of Allāh Ta’āla be upon you – that, showoff nullifies deeds and if one doesn’t repent from such despicable act, one may earn the wrath of Allāh Ta’āla, and it is amongst the fatalities.

For this reason, it is wājib upon one to straighten one’s determination towards its elimination.

However, in its cure, are two stages: firstly, uprooting it from the main source and secondly, resisting and pushing away its thought in the heart.

*1). First Stage.*

Know that, the sources of showoff are the love of status and position, but when separated, it branches into three sources which are; love of praise, fearing of blame, and covetousness over what is in the hand of others.

In this regard, it is transmitted in the “Sahīhayn” in the hadith of Abī Mūsaa Radiyallāhu anhu who said:

_”A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: O Rasūlallahi (ﷺ), What kind of fighting is in the cause of Allāh for some of us fight because of being enraged and some for the sake of his haughtiness.” The Prophet (ﷺ) raised his head (as the questioner was standing) and said, “He who fights so that the Word of Allāh should be superior, then he fights in the cause of Allāh.”_

Transmitted by Imām Al-Bukhārī#123 and Imām Muslim#1904.

Thus, the meaning of this is that, the one who fights due to braveness loves to attain certain reputation and praise amongst people, the one who fights due to being enraged fears to be blamed of cowardice while the one who fights for proudness did that so that his status can be recognized by others.

And also, it is possible for a person not to love praise, but he hates to be blamed. For instance, a Jāhil who gives fatwa without knowledge fearing that he may be tagged as a Jāhīl if he abstains himself from giving the fatwa, all these acts leads to showoff.

Allāhu A’alam! Bārakallāhu fīkum!
