_Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh-_
Said:
Know verily that, one of the greatest calamity of pride is that, it serves as an obstacle between a servant and his entrance to Paradise. For it also intervenes between him and the good attributes of the pious believers.
With arrogance, it’s never possible for one to love for others what one loves for oneself nor to be humble and gentle to them.
In fact, pride leads to some bad characters such as enmity, envy, excessive angriness, lack of accepting sincere advice, belittling, backbiting and slandering others and the likes.
Of the most dangerous type of arrogance is that which prevents a servant from accepting the clear truth or gaining knowledge.
Although, some individuals are aware of the grievous setbacks of arrogance, but due to desires and whims, they couldn’t subdue their heart to overcome this despicable behavior and they use to reject the truth whenever it comes to them.
In this context, Allah, The most High said:
_وَجَحَدُوا بِهَا وَاسْتَيْقَنَتْهَا أَنفُسُهُمْ ظُلْمًا وَعُلُوًّا…._
_And they denied them unjustly and proudly while their soul had been convinced of them…_.
Suratu An-Naml, verse 14.
Allāh Ta’āla also said:
_فَقَالُوا أَنُؤْمِنُ لِبَشَرَيْنِ مِثْلِنَا…._
_And they said: What! shall we believe in two men like ourselves…..?_
And in another verse Allah Ta’āla also said:
_إِنْ أَنتُمْ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُنَا…_
_You are nothing but mortals like us;…._
Suratu Ibrāhīm, verse 10.
And many verses have been revealed in this regard, and this is pride upon Allāh Ta’āla and His beloved Rasūl sallallāhu a’layhi wasallam.
And we have explained that, arrogance is for one to belittle others, to feel proud on them, and this may lead to being arrogant on the commandments of Allāh Azzawajal.
And for instance, the arrogance of Iblīs upon prophet Ādam a’layhissalam has made him to go against the Hukm of Allāh by refusing to make sujud to Ādam ‘alayhissalm as commanded by Allāh Ta’āla.
Lastly, The Rasūl salallāhu ālayhi wasallam described arrogance in an authentic Hadith as:
_ﺍﻟْﻜِﺒْﺮُ ﺑَﻄَﺮُ ﺍﻟْﺤَﻖِّ ﻭَﻏَﻤْﻂُ ﺍﻟﻨَّﺎﺱِ”._
_Pride is disdaining the truth (out of self-conceit) and scorning of the people._
