_Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh-_
Said:
*SELF RECOGNITION*
It was reported from ‘Abdullāh Ibn ‘Umar Radiyallāhu anhumā that the prophet salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:
_”ﺑَﻴْﻨَﻤَﺎ ﺭَﺟُﻞٌ ﻳَﺠُﺮُّ ﺇِﺯَﺍﺭَﻩُ ﻣِﻦَ ﺍﻟْﺨُﻴَﻼَﺀِ ﺧُﺴِﻒَ ﺑِﻪِ، ﻓَﻬْﻮَ ﻳَﺘَﺠَﻠْﺠَﻞُ ﻓِﻲ ﺍﻷَﺭْﺽِ ﺇِﻟَﻰ ﻳَﻮْﻡِ ﺍﻟْﻘِﻴَﺎﻣَﺔِ.”_
_”While a man was walking, dragging his dress with pride, he was caused to be swallowed by the earth and will go on sinking in it till the Day of Qiyāmah.”_
Transmitted by Imām Al-Bukhāri#3485.
And the Messenger salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam also said:
_”ﺛﻼﺙ ﻣﻨﺠﻴﺎﺕ، ﻭﺛﻼﺙ ﻣﻬﻠﻜﺎﺕ، ﻓﺄﻣﺎ ﺍﻟﻤﻨﺠﻴﺎﺕ: ﻓﺘﻘﻮﻯ الله ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﺴﺮ ﻭﺍﻟﻌﻼﻧﻴﺔ، ﻭﺍﻟﻘﻮﻝ ﺑﺎﻟﺤﻖ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﺮﺿﺎ ﻭﺍﻟﺴﺨﻂ، ﻭﺍﻟﻘﺼﺪ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﻐﻨﻰ ﻭﺍﻟﻔﻘﺮ، ﻭﺃﻣﺎ ﺍﻟﻤﻬﻠﻜﺎﺕ : ﻓﺸﺢ ﻣﻄﺎﻉ، ﻭﻫﻮﻯ ﻣﺘﺒﻊ، ﻭﺇﻋﺠﺎﺏ ﺍﻟﻤﺮﺀ ﺑﻨﻔﺴﻪ.”_
_”Three things save, and three things destroy. As for the three things that save, they are: the fear of Allah in secret and public, and fairness in anger and pleasure, and moderation in poverty and richness. As for three things destroy, they are: greediness that is obeyed, and desires that are followed, and a person becoming self conceited.”_
Transmitted by Imām Al-Baihaqi in Shu’abu Al- Īmān Pg(745). And Shaykh Al-Albāni declared it as Hasan in “Sahīhu Al- Jami’ Pg(3045).
And it was reported from Ibn Mash’ūd Radiyallāhu anhu that he said:
_”Destruction happens into two major things: self amazement and despair. And this is because success cannot be attained except with struggle and determination, whereas a hopeless person doesn’t struggle, and the self conceit person thinks he has reached his goal thus he needs not to struggle.”_
Musarrif Rahimahullāh said:
_”For me to pass the whole night sleeping and wake up regretting for that is beloved to me than to pass the whole night standing in praying and still feel proud due to that.”_
