Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh- said:
And know that, a servant cannot do without patience in every stage of his life, and this is because what a servant faced in this dunya is not out of two kinds:
The First Kind:
What goes inline with his desires of being healthy, rich, having high status, many families, followers, and gathering all the luxuries of dunya. A servant needs to be patient on all these, thus, he should not turn to them completely, and he should not exceed limit in terms of their usage, and he should safeguard the rights of Allāh Ta’āla in his wealth by giving out charity. If he is unable to control himself in terms of spending and clinging to them, such bad attitude leads him to arrogance and greediness, and this is why some ‘Ulama were reported to have said:
It is highly possible for a believer to be patient and endure difficulties, but nobody endure prosperity and enjoyment within its limit except the truthful ones.
And ‘Abdur-rahmān Ibn ‘Awf Radiyallāhu was reported to have said:
We were tried with difficulties and we remain patient, but when we were tried with prosperity, we failed to bear patience.
For this reason, Allāh Ta’āla says:
O you who believe! let not your wealth, or your children, divert you from the remembrance of Allah; and whoever does that are the losers.
Sūratu Al-Munāfiqūn, Verse 9.
And He says:
_And know that your property and your children are a temptation, and that Allah is He with Whom there is a mighty reward._
Sūratu Al-Anfāl, Verse 28.
_O you who believe! surely from amongst your wives and your children there is an enemy to you; therefore beware of them;.._
Sūratu At-taghābun, Verse 14.
Therefore, know that, only men of high instinct endure prosperity without passing limits, and this type of patience expresses gratitude, and it is not attained except by fulfilling its rights. And indeed, enduring patience in terms of prosperity is of a difficult issue; because one have all facilities to do and undo, for it is easier for a hungry person to bear patience in the absence of food while it is difficult to bear that in the presence of delicious food.
Allāhu A’alam! Bārakallāhu fīkum!
