Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh-
Said:
The virtue of Poverty.
As for verses, Allah Has mentioned many verses praising the poor ones.
He says:
لِلْفُقَرَاءِ الَّذِينَ أُحْصِرُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ…
(Charity is) for the poor who are confined in the way of Allah– they cannot go about in the land;…
Sūratu Al-Baqarah, Verse 273.
He also says:
لِلْفُقَرَاءِ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ الَّذِينَ أُخْرِجُوا مِن دِيَارِهِمْ وَأَمْوَالِهِمْ…
(It is) for the poor Muhājirs, those who were expelled from their homes and their possessions,..
Sūratu Al-Hashr, Verse 8.
Many Ahādīth Has also been narrated in that context.
The Rasūl Salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:
قمت على باب الجنة فإذا عامة من يدخلها الفقراء، إلا أن أصحاب الجد محبوسون….
I stood at the door of Paradise and I found that the majority of those who entered therein was that of poor ones and weathly ones were detained to get into that.
Transmitted in the Sahīhayn.
It is also reported by Abū Hurairah Radiyallāhu anhu who said: the Rasūl Salallāhu ‘alayhi said:
اللهم اجعل رزق آل محمد قوتا
O Allāh, make for the family of Muhammad the provision which is a bare subsistence.
Transmitted by Imām Muslim.
‘Āishah Radiyallāhu anha also reported:
ما شبع آل محمد منذ قدم المدينة من طعام البر ثلاث ليال تباعا حتى قبض.
Never had the family of Muhammad salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam eaten to the fill since their arrival in Madīna with the bread of wheat for three consecutive nights until the death of the Rasūl.
Reported by Imām Muslim.
Umar Radiyallāhu anhu said:
Indeed, I saw the Rasūl salallāhu’alayhi wasallam at times couldn’t find even inferior quality of the dates which he could fill his belly.
Transmitted by Imām Muslim.
And Abū Hurairah Radiyallāhu anhu said: the Rasūl salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:
يدخل فقراء المؤمنين الجنة قبل أغنيائهم بخمسائة عام.
The poor believers will be admitted into paradise five hundred years before the rich ones.
Transmitted by Ibn Mājah#4122. Shaykh Al-Albānī declared it as Sahih in “Sahīhu Al-Jāmi’#4104.
Abū Ad-dardah said:
حساب ذي الدرهمين أشد حسابا من ذي الدرهم.
_he accountability of the one with two dirham is longer and severe as against one with a dirham.
The poor ones used to seat nearer to Sufyān Ath-thawrī in gathering more than the rich ones.
A man gave to Ibrāhīm bn Adham thousand dirham but he rejected them saying:
تريد أن تمحو اسمي من ديوان الفقراء؟ لا أفعل
Do you want to erase my name from the book of the poor ones? Nay, I will not.
The Rasūl salallāhu’alayhi wasallam said:
طوبى لمن هدي إلى الإسلام وكان عيشه كفافا، وقنع بما آتاه الله عز وجل.
He is successful who has accepted Islām, who has been provided with sufficient for his want and was contented with what was bestowed upon him by Allāh ‘Azzawajal.
