Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh-
Said:
As for the categories of Zuhd as to its end, then they are three levels:
1). Zuhd in order to be saved from punishment, accountability, fear on the Day of Resurrection, this is the Zuhd of the Khāifīn( those fearing Allāh).
2). Zuhd in order to hasten for rewards, and eternal enjoyment in Jannah, this is the Zuhd of those who hope for reward because this people reject the luxuries and pleasure of the Dunya in order to attain that of the Hereafter.
3). This is the highest stage. This is for a servant to practise Zuhd not mainly to get rid of grieve nor to achieve enjoyment in the life to come, Rather, in order to get closer to Allāh Ta’āla, and this is the Zuhd of the Muhsinīn, for the sweetness of seeing Allāh Subhānahu Wa Ta’āla as against the sweetness of Jannah is as though the happiness of possesses the whole Dunya as against the happiness of playing with a tiny bird.
