Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh-
Said:
3. Accommodation
Know that, the Zāhīd has three levels in this regard.
The highest level is for him not to seek a specific place for himself, rather he should be contented with a place in a mosque.
The middle stage is for him to have a place for himself like a hutch.
The lowest level is for him to seek for a room that’s built. However, whenever he seeks more than what’s recommended like raising the ceiling higher, then he has exceeded the limit of Zuhd regarding accommodation.
And Al-Hasan said:
Whenever I entered the room of the Rasūl salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam, I used to reach the ceiling of the room with my hands.
And in a Hadīth, the Rasūl salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:
“إن المسلم ليؤجر في كل شيء ينفقه إلا في شيء يجعله في هذا التراب”
Verily, a Muslim is rewarded for whatever he spends except that which he spends on building.
Imām Al-Bukhārī#5672.
And Ibrāhīm An-Nakh’ī Rahimahullāhu said:
If a building is built averagely, then there is no reward nor punishment.
In summary, whatever is needed for necessity is not expected to exceed the limit of asceticism.
Allāhu A’alam
Bārakāllāhu fīkum.
