Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh-
Said:
5). Marriage.
Know that, Zuhd is not measured with marriage and it doesn’t depend on the number of wives one possessed. In this regard, Sahl Ibn ‘Abdullahi said: women was made beloved to the Rasūl salallāhu alayhi wasallam. And ‘Aliyy Radiyallāhu anhu was the most ascetic amongst the companions, but had four wives.
It was reported that Abū Suleimān said:
Whatever distracts you from Allāh be it family, wealth or children, is blameworthy.
That said. Know that, whoever is overwhelmed with desires and fears for himself Zina, then marriage becomes a necessity in his case in order to curb the desires.
However, for the one who is not disturbed with desires and doesn’t fear falling into Zina, then the stallion ‘ulama upheld different opinion as to whether to go for marriage or to stick to ibādat.
Though, people differ regarding their motive for marriage. What is not known of the goal of the pious salaf regarding marriage is that it is done in order to have pious offspring, to seek Halal sustenance for the family so that the Deen is not affected and the heart is not distracted from ibādat with unnecessary thoughts.
Thus, the idea of renouncing marriage in order to practise Zuhd is baseless in the Shariah because it goes against the Sunnah of the Rasūl salallāhu’alayhi wasallam.
The pious Salaf prefer a religious woman over a beautiful one, for it is easier in terms of spending and managing her affairs. Whereas a beautiful woman at times distracts and troubles the heart, and requires much spending though there are some women who doesn’t fall in this category.
