The Signs of Zuhd

Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh-
Said:

THE SIGNS OF ZUHD.

One may think that shunning away from wealth completely is a sign of Zuhd, but in real sense, it is not.

For renouncing wealth, and showing Zuhd apparently is easy for the one who wants to be praised with Zuhd.

Many monks have attached themselves to the monasteries and lived under unsubstantial food. And their main goal for this is just to achieve praises and reputations.

Hence, Zuhd entails Halal wealth based on necessity and status for its perfection.

Ibn Al-Mubārak said:

The best Zuhd is for one to conceal being a Zāhid.

Know that, the signs of Zuhd depend on three major elements:

1). One should not be exulted with gains nor sad upon losses. Allāhu Ta’āla says:

لِّكَيْلَا تَأْسَوْا عَلَىٰ مَا فَاتَكُمْ وَلَا تَفْرَحُوا بِمَا آتَاكُمْ وَاللَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخْتَالٍ فَخُورٍ

So that you may not grieve for what has escaped you, nor be exultant at what He has given you; and Allah does not love any arrogant boaster

Sūratu Al-Hadīd, Verse 23.

This is a sign of Zuhd.

2). Both praises and criticism should be equal in one’s sight, and this is a sign of Zuhd in status.

3). One should be mindful of Allah and one’s heart, there should be sweetness of obedience.

As for the combination of love of Dunya and the love of Allāh Ta’āla in a Heart is like the possibility of the presence of water and air in a pot at the same time, and that can never happened.

Hence, the love of Allāh Ta’āla and Dunya never coexist in a heart.

Some of Zuhhād was asked:

Where did Zuhd lead you to?they said: to the friendship of Allāh.

Yahya Ibn Mu’ādh said:

Dunya is as though a bride, the one who sought after it becomes its maid, but Zuhd blackens it face, plucks its hairs and burns its dress.

The knowledgeable person is preoccupied with the remembrance of Allāh Ta’āla.

That said. Since Zuhd cannot be perfected except with Tawakkul, In Shā Allāh, we shall proceed in its explanation in our next post.
