Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisī -rahimahullāh-
Said:
B). Means to protect a present benefit such as saving. Hence, whosoever finds lawful food whose continue searching for it may distract his attention, then saving in that case in order to protect himself from distraction is not out of Tawakkul especially if he has a lot of family and dependents.
In the Sahīhayn from the Hadīth of ‘Umar Ibn Khattāb Radiyallāhu anhu who said:
The prophet Salallāhu’alayhi wasallam used to sell the dates of the garden of Banī Nadir and store for his family so much food as would cover their needs for a whole year.
Transmitted by Imām Al-Bukhārī#5357 and Imām Muslim#1757.
However, if it was argued that: the Rasūl salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam forbade Bilāl Radiyallāhu anhu from saving as transmitted in an Hadīth by Imām Abū Dawūd#3055 with a sound chain of narration.
The answer to this argument is that the guests with Bilāl were all poor. If he had saved, they would have suffered hunger.
In addition, the state of Bilāl and his likes necessitated that they should not save anything.
C. Sticking on means for defence and protection.
Is not of tawakkul to give up the means for defence against harm, the way it is insane to sleep on a torrent or under a destructed building, all these are not permissible in any form.
Likewise, wearing armour, placing tight security at the gate, all these doesn’t contradict tawakkul
In this regard, Allāh Ta’āla says:
وَلْيَأْخُذُوا أَسْلِحَتَهُمْ
And let them take their arms.
Sūrat An-Nisa Verse 102
And one should rely on Allāh Ta’āla, the origin of all causes, not on the means, and be pleased with all what He Decrees.
For instance, if one goods is stolen and one presumed guard against it as a way to prevent that which Allāh Has decreed, or complained about the adversity, then one is far away from tawakkul.
And one should know that Destiny is as though a physician, if he gave one food, one is happy and say: if not that the physician knows that the food is beneficial for my health, he wouldn’t give me. And if he deprived one of the food, one is also happy and say: If not that he knows that the food is harmful to me, he wouldn’t deprived me of it.
Likewise, if Allāh deprived one of something, then it is for one’s interest.
It was reported that someone complained to an ‘Ālim of high way robbery, the ‘Ālim replied by saying:
If you are not disturbed about how this act of high way robbery is being done by the Muslims than loosing your wealth, then you have not done real Nasīha for the Muslims
D. Working to get ride of an adversity, like curing of sickness and the likes.
Allāhu A’alam
Bārakāllāhu Fikum.
Jazākumullahu Khayran.
10th Rabīu Al-Awwal, 1441H.
