Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi-rahimahullāh-
Said:
It is reported from Abū kabshah Al-Anmārī Radiyallāhu anhu who said: The Rasūl salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:
The similitude of these Ummah is as though four people: The first is given wealth and knowledge. So he spends his wealth in the cause of Allāh. The second is gifted with knowledge only: so he says, ‘ if I have had wealth like that person, I would spend it likewise.’ the Rasūl Salallāhu’alayhi wasallam said: they will have equal rewards. The third man is granted wealth, which he wrongfully spends. The fourth person is deprived from both wealth and knowledge and he opines, ‘if I had like him, I would do likewise. Thus: they will have equal punishment.

Know that, deeds generally are of three categories:
1). Disobedience.
Its status doesn’t alter due to intention, for instance, one who built a mosque with Haram wealth intending good by so doing is not rewarded due to his good intention.
In fact, seeking to do good acts through evils leads to another evil, good deeds are deeds which are considered as good by the shar’h. Thus, evil or mischief can never turn to good due to good intention in the shar’h.
2). Obedience.
It is attached with intention in their original validity, and in the double rewards, as for its Asl, is for one to observe ibādat for the sake of Allāh alone, but if one seeks showoff, then it becomes sin. As for the double rewards, then it depends on the status of the intention. For a single obedience, can be used to intend variety of good deeds thereby attaining reward for each intention.
3). The permissible deeds.
Every permissible deeds contain good intentions, which can be used to attain high status in the sight of Allāh. What a great loss for the one who neglects such acts!
Therefore, one should never belittle any deed no matter how small it is, for one shall be held accountable for it on the day of Qiyāmah. For instance, one should apply perfume in order to follow the Sunnah of the Rasūl Salallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam, then one shall be rewarded for it.
One of the pious salaf said:
I love to have intention in everything, even in my eating, drinking, sleeping and answering the call of nature.
