Imām Abū Hamīd
Al-Ghazali – Rahimahullāhu
said:
The Purification of the Soul.
Oh beloved son, indeed, you have underwent sleepless night for research, reading and studying to attain knowledge.
If your intention for this marvelous task is just to achieve the worldly gains, reputation, and to boast amongst your peers, then woe on you for this your fruitless effort.
And if your goal for this is to revive the Sharī”ah of the Rasūl Salallāhu alayhi wasallam and to censor your attitudes and to break the backbone of the soul which commands evil, then a good final state shall be yours in this Dunya and the next.
He has said the truth the Shā’ir who said:
سهر العيون لغير وجهك ضائع
وبكاؤهن لغير فقدك باطل
A sleepless night not for Your Sake( i.e not for the sake of Allāh Ta’āla) is a waste and unhelpful.
And weeping not for the lost of Your Deen or path(i.e the Dīn of Allāh Ta’āla) is worthless.
Allāhu A’alām.
Bārakallāhu fīkum.
Jazākumullahu Khayran.
