_Imaam Ibn Qudaamah Al-Maqdisi -rahimahullaah-_
Said:
Know verily, oh beloved ones that, indeed what the heart thinks of evil deeds are forgiven and overlooked by Allāh, these also involves that which the heart wishes to do as long the thought is not materialised into action.
Thus, whosoever desists from the evil deeds because of Allāh will be rewarded, and whosoever quits from it because of his incapability of doing the act, in his own case, we hope that he will be forgiven, except if he really has the intention and determination of doing the act, by which, all means, he pursued it to see that he attains his goals. And one should also know that, strong intention to carryout a sin, is a sin in itself.
In this regard, our beloved Messenger sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said:
_إذا التقى المسلمان بسيفيهما فالقاتل والمقتول في النار_ قيل: ما بال المقتول؟قال: إنه كان حريص على قتل صاحبه.
_When two Muslims fight (meet) each other with their swords, both the murderer as well as the murdered will go to the Hellfire._ It was said: It is all right for the murderer but what about the murdered one?’ The Messenger of Allāh sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam replied by saying: _He surely had the intention to kill his companion._
Transmitted and recorded by Imām Al-Bukhārī in his ‘Sahih’#31 and Imām Muslim in his Sahih#2888.
From the Hadith above, one sees that, having intention, determination and seeking all possible ways to commit a crime is a sin in itself. And also, actions are judged according to intention.
In addition, pride, showing off and arrogance are all deeds that has to do with the heart. Thus, all these are related to the heart not action per say, therefore, one will be held responsible for them.
