Imām Ibn Qudāmah Al-Maqdisi-rahimahullāh-
Said:
Agonies of Death.
Know verily that, the greatest pains that disturbs and destroys the delights of a servant in this Dunya is death especially the one who is fully engrossed in the search of worldly gains. That’s why he fears and dislikes death.
For instance, if a servant enjoys the greatest amusement in this world, but expects to be stroked and killed by a soldier whose arrival is not even certain, surely his life and pleasures will be unbalanced.
Whereas such a servant is expecting to be visited by the Angel of death any moment with agonies of Death and this visit is inevitable, but he is unmindful of it. And this is just due to ignorance and deception.
And know -Oh the intelligent ones- that, the agonies of death are more severe than the smitten of a sword.
For when smittens with sword, one will be able to cry out for assistance, but the screaming of a dying person is completely cut off out of his sufferings because he is overwhelmed by the pains which weaken all his body.
Even if he’s able to scream for help, his helpers are screened from the high sound because his Soul is taken away from his body starting from his legs till his throat. At that spot, he is totally cut off from the Dunya and the door of repentance is closed.
That said. There are some things which are recommended to be done by the dying person. He should think good of Allāh, His tongue should alter the Shahādah.
Good Hope is highly needed during the agonies of Death because shaitān may try to Install hatred in the heart of the person against the decree of Allāh and try to fear him. Therefore, good hope in Allāh is the greatest weapon needed to push away the enemy.
