Arrogance 02

📬 DAILY POST#505

_Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh-_
Said:

Know verily – may the blessings of Allāh Ta’āla be upon you – that, arrogance normally appears in the characters of a person like turning of the face from others in contempt, glancing sideways at them, walking majestically with pride, crossing the leg during sitting, or reclining, altering the intonation of the voice, beautifying speeches in order to attract the attention of others, and the likes.

In addition, amongst the bad characters of an arrogant person is that, he loves others to stand up for him out of respect on reaching a gathering or circle.

Although, the standing is of two kinds:

*A).* Standing on his head while he is sitting as a form of respect, and this is forbidden and disliked.

For the Rasūl sallallāhu a’layhi wasallam was reported to have said:

_Whoever loves to have the slaves of Allah stand up out of respect for him should take his sit in the Fire._

Transmitted by Imām Al Bukhāri in “Al-Adabu Al-Mufrad”#977. Shaykh Al Albāni declared it as Sahih in “As-sahīhah”#357.

And this act is normally common amongst the non Arabs and the arrogant ones.

*B).* Standing on the arrival of a person. Though, the salaf hardly do this and it is not common amongst them.

In this context, Anas Radiyallāhu anhu said:

_There is no person more beloved to them than The Messenger of Allāh sallallāhu a’layhi wasallam, and they would not stand when they saw him because they knew that he disliked that._

Transmitted by Imām At-tirmidhi#2754. Shaykh Al Albāni declared it as Sahih in “Sahīhu At-tirmidhi”.

However, the ‘ulamā have said:

It is beloved to stand up for parent, a just leader, and the honoured ones amongst people, and this act has become like a quality amongst the honoured ones to the extent that if one were to abandon it in the person that deserves it and ought to be respected, it may be considered as a form of disregard to the person and negligence of his Rights and this can cause envy.

Moreover, the recommendation to stand for others especially parents and likes when they approaches one doesn’t stop them from disliking such act and to see themselves of not deserving such respect.

Also, amongst the characters of the arrogant one is that he doesn’t like to walk alone. Rather, he loves others to walk behind him out of respect for him and he doesn’t visit others due to his arrogance.

And he may even have strong dislike for others to sit close to him or to walk with him.

Allāhu A’alam! Bārakallāhu fīkum!
