Imām Abū Hamīd
Al-Ghazali – Rahimahullāhu
said:
What to Learn about.
Oh beloved son, Live your life the way you want, surely you shall die. Love what you like, certainly you shall depart from it. Do what you like, certainly, you shall be rewarded accordingly.
Oh beloved Son, there is no much benefit that you will attain in the knowledge of kalām(I.e the knowledge that talked about the zāt of Allāh Ta’āla and His Sifāt), khilāf, medicine, Dawāwīn(i.e catalog), poetry, astronomy, ‘Arūd( that which talked about the principles guiding poems), An-Nahhu, Sarf, rather than just wasting your time.¹
Oh beloved Son, know that, Knowledge without practice is insanity; Practice without Knowledge is not feasible.
Know that the knowledge which doesn’t distance you from sins nor pushes you towards obedience will never distance you from the Hell of Jahannam,.
If you don’t work today and you refused to catch up with what you missed, then on the Day of Resurrection you may be amongst those that will say:
…فَارْجِعْنَا نَعْمَلْ صَالِحًا إِنَّا مُوقِنُونَ
…therefore send us back, we will do good; surely (now) we are certain.
Sūratu As-sajadah, verse 12.
But it will be said to you:
Oh you foolish one, where have been all this while.?!

¹)note: Imām Ghazālī doesn’t aim to belittle the ilm of hālah because he himself has mentioned that most of this knowledge are of far’du kifāyāt in his book Al-Ihyā. Rather, what the Imām kicked against is for one to completely engrossed all his life in this sciences and overlooking that which are far’du ‘In such as Tawhīd, Salah and the likes.
Allāhu A’alām.
Bārakallāhu fīkum.
Jazākumullahu Khayran.
3rd Ramadān, 1441H.
