_Imām Ibn Qudāmah -rahimahullāh-_
Said:
Know that, it is reported in the Sahīhu Muslim that ‘Umar Ibn Sa’d came to his father Sa’d while he was in the fold of his camels outside Madīna, when Sa’d saw him he said: I seek refuge in Allāh from the evil of this rider. When ‘Umar got down from his ride he said to his father Sa’d:
O father, you have occupied yourself with your camels and sheep and you left people behind who are fighting and contending for kingdom? S’ad struck his chest and said: keep quite, for I heard the Rasūl salallāhu ālayhi wasallam saying:
_ﺇِﻥَّ ﺍﻟﻠَّﻪَ ﻳُﺤِﺐُّ ﺍﻟْﻌَﺒْﺪَ ﺍﻟﺘَّﻘِﻲَّ ﺍﻟْﻐَﻨِﻲَّ ﺍﻟْﺨَﻔِﻲَّ_
_Verily, Allah loves the servant who is pious, content and hidden (from the view of people regarding his good affairs)._
Transmitted by Imām Muslim in his ‘Sahih’#2965.
Ibn Mashu’d Radiyallāhu anhu used to give Nasīha to his companions by saying:
_Be as though the springs of knowledge, lamps of guidance, sticking to your houses, light for the night, purifying your heart, wearing shabby clothes, you will be recognized in the heaven, and respected by those on earth._
However, one may argue that in this, it shows the benefits of preferring to be unknown by others as against being recognized, then what about the popularity of the prophets and the past ulamā.?
We will respond by saying that, what is blameworthy is for one to intentionally suit for reputation and popularity, but if Allāh in His infinite Makes one to be popular and increases one’s status within the people without one seeking for it, then it is not blameworthy.
Alhough, its presence(I.e reputation) serves as fitna for those who are weak and can be easily taken away by shaitān.
Hence, the similitude of the weak one here is as though a man who has not perfected swimming but goes for it and he is almost sinking into the water. Thus, if another person clutched himself to him in order to be safe from the water, they will surely both sink into the water, but as for the one who has perfected swimming, if a person attached himself to him, they will both be saved from drowning into the water.
